Stomach Flu (gastroenteritis)

This information is about stomach flu for adults and some information does not apply to children. You’ll learn what stomach flu is, what its symptoms are, what to eat when you have stomach flu and how to treat stomach flu.

Stomach flu is often called “intestinal flu.” It’s an illness caused by a virus, and it produces different symptoms in different people. What people call stomach flu is usually marked by nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and a general sick feeling.

How to Treat Stomach Flu Symptoms

First, you need to know that antibiotics, such as penicillin, don’t work on flu because antibiotics only kill bacteria. The flu is caused by a virus. Your body’s defenses do the best job in fighting the illness.

You can help your body fight the flu by getting as much rest as possible. Do light activities if you must do something, but rest as soon as you get tired. Stay home from work, unless your symptoms are mild. You’ll recover faster that way, and you won’t risk infecting others at work.

You should also drink enough fluids to avoid dehydration — but that takes some care when your symptoms are nausea and diarrhea. So let’s cover what you can do to relieve these symptoms.

What to Eat When You Have Stomach Flu

When your stomach is upset, the last thing it needs is food. If you feel nauseated, give your stomach a rest from food. Don’t eat or drink anything for about two hours. If you are vomiting, don’t eat or drink anything for about four hours. Then begin taking small sips of water. If you can keep the water down, gradually work up to small amounts — half-a-cup or less — of Gatorade, flat ginger ale, or half-water half-grape juice (don’t drink juice if you are also having diarrhea). Do this for four to eight hours. You can flatten ginger ale by stirring it to let the bubbles escape. If you are keeping down liquids, and feel like it, try eating saltine crackers or dry toast. Avoid sugary drinks, orange juice and other acidic beverages, and foods that are high in sugar, greasy or spicy.

You can also try the anti-nausea drug Dramamine if you are sure that you are not pregnant or allergic to it. Dramamine is not safe to take during pregnancy. This non-prescription medication is available at drug stores, and should be used as directed. If these measures don’t control your nausea, you should contact your healthcare provider. You should also call your healthcare provider if you take daily medication for any chronic medical condition and the nausea prevents you from taking your medicine.

Another common symptom of stomach flu is diarrhea. If you develop diarrhea, don’t eat or drink anything for four hours. Then start with sips of water and work up gradually, over several hours, to small amounts of ginger ale, Jell-O, Gatorade, or bouillon (clear soup). Again, you can also try saltines or dry toast. But don’t eat fruit juices or other solid foods for 24 to 48 hours. These foods will just stimulate the diarrhea. Sometimes dairy products also stimulate diarrhea after the initial flu, and therefore, it may be wise to stay away from dairy products for a few weeks.

After the first 24 to 48 hours, gradually resume eating solid foods like bananas, applesauce, or dry toast. Meanwhile, you can try the non-prescription medication Donagel or Kaopectate, as directed on the label, to help control diarrhea.

With diarrhea, you should call your healthcare provider if you don’t improve after three days — or if the diarrhea gets worse. Also call if your diarrhea is bloody, if you have severe abdominal cramps associated with nausea, vomiting and fever, or if you are sick after having recently returned from a trip to another country.

The stomach flu virus is contagious and can spread to family and friends

Viral gastroenteritis is contagious. The viruses that cause stomach flu are spread through close contact with infected persons (for example, by sharing food, water, or eating utensils of someone who has the stomach flu). So don’t let anyone eat or drink after you. You can also spread the virus by not washing your hands after cleaning up vomit or diarrhea, or after using the bathroom. So the best way to prevent the spread of the virus is washing your hands often and not spreading the virus for others.

Key points about stomach flu:

  • Stomach flu can have different symptoms, but the common ones are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Only your body can cure this condition, but you can help it do the job by getting plenty of rest.
  • For nausea and vomiting, stop eating for two to four hours, then gradually introduce small amounts of water and other fluids. Avoid most solid foods for 24 hours.
  • For diarrhea, don’t eat or drink for four hours; then gradually increase your intake of fluids. Avoid most solid foods and fruit juices for 24 to 48 hours.
  • The stomach flu virus is contagious – don’t let anyone eat or drink after you.
  • If your stomach flu symptoms are severe, unusual, or persistent, call your healthcare provider for advice.

Call your doctor or go to the emergency room if you have bloody diarrhea, if you become dehydrated (feel weak, lightheaded or dizzy, or your heart is racing), if you’ve been vomiting for more than 2 days or if you’re vomiting blood.

OMG! Wednesday it all began I had breakfast and about 15 minutes after, the water began uncontrollably pouring out of my bum over and over. I would be on the toilet, i’d get off the toilet the minute I pulled my pants up, there it goes again rushing back on the toilet. The worst was the vomiting it was horrific and uncontrollable, I couldn’t gasp for air this went on from noon to 8pm. I was as white as a ghost, thought I was going to die. In the end all that would come out from both ends at the same time was bile and the sour taste lingers in your mouth no matter if I rinsed or brushed my teeth. Wow I have never in my 33 years of life been that sick. Today is Saturday and I still don’t feel good my head still feels whoozy and I’m still nauseated, drinking water, 7-up, eating jello and soup, the only thing that helps a bit is ginger tea. good luck to anyone who catches this, I don’t know how long this will last?

OMG I feel for all you peeps and thanks for writing. My 2 boys ( 9 & 15 ) had this horrible stomach flu earlier in the week and sure enough, as I was in the mall getting my taxes done (2pm) I started to feel woozey and sweaty hot. Then on the way to the eye doctor I’m like omg gotta hit the bathroom NOW! Puked my guts out,(thought it was a bad lunch at the restaurant) went to eye doctor for the kid and started feeling sick, sweaty and dizzy. Puked again on the way outta the mall and drove home (somehow). I puked non stop for 5 hours and out the other end 1 hr into the barfin. Couldnt sleep, drank water just to make the puking easier, and ate ice to ease the throat pain. Mega stomach cramps then finally fell asleep. Woke up a 6am feeling alot better but very weak. Not pukin or poopin now, just tried a small amount of chicken noodle soup and water and its staying down. Im a 36 yr old female from Vancouver B.C and my whole family has had this now but really it only lasted 2 days. Perhaps its because we eat properly and would never dream of putting things like mcdonalds in our stomachs. Think SUBWAY people. I have to work tomorrow no matter what and with all the cool Olympic games stuff coming up Im glad I will be better soon!!!

Hope you all get well soon and remember, this to shall pass!! I hope you have someone to care for you when your sick because I didn’t!!

I felt like I was going to die last night… It started with feeling a bit puky then 2 hrs later vomit coming out full force like water from a fire hose.
I felt so thirsty though, thought maybe I should drink some water. Big mistake, stomach started hurting from the water and puked some more…and then started the Diarrhea. With stomach cramps that were so bad. I drifted in and out of sleep. For everyone who experienced similar, go slow with the water or chew some ice. This morning, I have stopped vomiting but still have the diarrhea.. Started on some gingerale, and it is helping settle my stomach and probably helping with energy. I think the worst of it has passed (I really hope so)as I’m able to sit up and go online, but listen to your body it will tell you what it needs. Rest and stay hydrated, The Canada Dry is helping me today. I don’t even drink gingerale too often but my body wanted it more than water..Throw on a movie to keep your mind occupied and bundle up on the couch..your body will do the rest..

I feel sorry for anyone going through this right now. Tuesday my daughter woke up feeling yucky. She slept all day with a slight fever. No vomit or diarrhea. Saturday, her birthday party, I had to go outside at the skate rink and empty myself. I got home and everything came out both ends at that point. Had fever, aches, and slept inbetween running to the bathroom and puking. 3 days now and no more puking or diarrhea but still dizzy, weak, and still no eating.

I ate dinner Friday evening when I started shaking and I was cold. My stomach was very painful on the right side. I was constipated all day and could not pass gas. The gas went up into my stomach and caused the pain and upset on the right side of my stomach. I was taken to the ER. My temp was 101. I was admitted into the hospital. I was given an IV with antibiotics. A catscan was taken of my stomach. I vomitted 2 over the weekend. I could not put any pressure on my stomach. I was sent home on Monday. My temp was normal. Today is Tuesda. My temp is about 99. My stomach is upset. I can only eat vegetable soup and ice cream and tea. Ice cream settles my stomach. I cannot have any heavy foods or it will upset my stomach.

In the San Francisco bay area. Sick for 5 days so far. Vomiting mainly on the first day – but it was heinous. Bile. Surprising how long this thing lasts! They say novo and rota viruses are short-lived, 12-24 hours. So what is this thing?

It’s all about clear fluids. FIVE days! Yeah, but does my TA care? No, he’s the Draconian Ninja monster. “Homework submitted after the deadline will get a zero.” I’m in h*ll – barfing and doing statistics.

Take it easy if you have the stomache flu just take it easy…everything will be just fine! good luck to you all hopefully i’ve been informative!

I work at a daycare and it’s been going around and sure enough last night I got home at six and started puking all over the place, then it started from the other end too. I tried a sip of water which lasted about 3 minutes until that came back up. I slept in the bathroom (using the term “slept” lightly) and woke up this morning with nothing in me to come out. Going to the doctor later, hopefully to get some iv fluids in me. I’m light headed and miserable. This suckssss.

I just got the flu last night. Started with cold like symptoms (sore throat) but last night I woke up at 3am and was having really bad stomach cramps. Thought it was just gas, but when I came back to my room I puked all over my carpet. I can’t eat or drink anything except ice chips. I also have diarrhea and a really bad headache (I’m addicted to coffee and I can’t have it which would explain the headache.) I really want to take some tylenol but I’m afraid I will just puke it up :(

I was very fatigued for two days. I only drank a little water and had a couple bites of pizza. I still feel bad on the third day but I have more energy and I’m no longer very dizzy. I didn’t see a doctor. Even though it felt very bad. This was maybe the second worst time. I could still control my dumps and I didn’t vomit. But I felt like it. I have a lot of gas and my stomach hurts. The worst time was a few years ago when I woke up one morning and kept going to the toilet and vomiting a little. The fatigue this time was worse. It is hard to describe. I didn’t have a headache, but I was moaning all night.

When I get the stomach bug I do not vomit, but I do get the nausea, cramps and diarrhea. What I have found to help the diarrea( but not sure if this helps if you are vomiting) is to follow the BRAT diet. The sooner that I follow this the quicker I feel better. It is Bananas, Rice( must be plain and white),Apple sauce and Toast( must be white with no spread). The diet is not tasty or enjoyable to eat, but it works! A couple of days before I got the bug I got a few canker sores in my mouth and felt really tired–I thought it was going to be a cold or atleast a cold sore, but turns out it was a GI virus.I hope everybody recovers soon!

Also in San Francisco Bay Area. Had this thing since Wednesday night. I woke up and ran to the bathroom to puke and found I also had a problem with the other end as well. Luckily I just managed to catch both ends in time. I thought it would be gone by now but the diarrhea just won’t go away. I’m eating bananas and warm rice now. That seems to be very soothing. Fruit juice is not good for the diarrhea….comes right back out again.

Found out I have the stomach flu. I’ve been to the bathroom non-stop. I never puke, so I didn’t. Yesterday, I kept on burping, and it tasted like stomach acid (which it probably was). My mom got me a nice 2 liter bottle of Canada Dry. I didn’t eat all day yesterday, but I had some french toast today. I feel a lot better, but I still have diarrhea, and I don’t think it’s going to stop for a while. I just wish it did. I’ve flushed more than 30 times in the past 20 hours or so. I slept a lot, but after I wake up I feel exhausted.

Lightly salted water ended my severe dehydration from gastroenteritis.

It may seem counterintuitive, but after 10 hours of diarrhea and vomiting, trying to rehydrate with small sips of plain water or coconut water, I just couldn’t keep anything down. My AMA home symptoms guide recommended treating v+d with lightly salted water, 1/2 tsp per pint. It worked amazingly well–no more vomiting, minimal diarrhea. I even have some appetite back (though I’m holding off on solid food for tonight).

    Hope this helps someone!

This virus is no fun. My husband had to work all weekend including Monday(Family day) and our 5 years old boy was up all night Saturday with vomiting and diarrhea until 8 in the morning. After spending all day Sunday disinfecting everything and changing sheets I got sick myself and was sick for about 36hrs. Now my poor husband and 3 year old daughter are getting sick.
Best advice, buy saltine crackers, water, banana popsicles, Gatorade G2, Gingerale and white rice, your gonna need it.

Then, I was up for the rest of the night with severe stomach cramps, I was extremely nauseated, throwing up, light headed, very weak and tired but no diarreah. Thank god. But I couldnt eat or drink anything until the next day. Even a little bit of water was too much 4 me. It was horrible. I thought I was dying. Puking is no fun and I encourage hand washing. Hello, i have had this “Stomach Flu” for roughly 2 weeks, i think i have had it very severe. I am 17 years of age and male.

    My symptoms where as followed:

    Dizziness
    diarrhea
    Puking
Heart Problems [Racing and pounding against my ribs]

It first started with just random puking, my head got very hot and i felt very dizzy, my heart started to race. i thought this was normal due to the fact i was being sick. after i was sick, i jumped into bed fully clothed with a hot water bottle. minutes after puking i was having full body shivers which was very scary.

I just stayed in bed all day and didnt do anything, i slept all night and woke 14 hours later. I was feeling a little better, i was able to walk and move normally, i felt quite dizzy and my heart was really worrying me.

I drank water regularly and ate Plain bland foods. I am a smoker and i decided to have one. it made my heart race ten fold, i was very scared, my breathing became very shallow i was almost having a panic attack, i was able to calm down shorty after.

I was feeling very well 2 days after this, decided to give my girlfriend a visit. I felt fine, i eat normal food and drank fizzy drinks. I had light sex with my girlfriend and afterwards had a cigarette. My heart was racing again and i puked for the second time.

This time i was terrible, shivering for atleast an hour. my hear was literally jumping out of my chest, i was so scared.

I was given a lift home by a friend and went straight to bed. for the days up to now, i have been in bed all day, my heart has been hurting and pounding. i went to the doctors because i was so frightended i might have a heart attack, i know its something most teenagers at my age worry about but i was very scared. i had never been ill like this, EVER! She gave me 15 Cyclizine 50mg tabs which is an anti-sickness tablet. It is required to take 3 per day [WHEN REQUIRED]

I have had mild but bile like diarrhea from the up coming days.

It is now 23rd of Feb. and i my heart has calmed down, i still feel slightly dizzy. I havnt puked again. [Only happened twice] and my diarrhea has started to solidify.

I was so scared that i might have M.E, IBS, heart problems, lung cancer, you name it i was so worried.

the only thing that got me through these 2 weeks of hell, was my mother.

I thank her with my life.

I hope my telling of my experience with this “stomach flu” has opened peoples eyes to being careful with food.

    p.s

It was caused by not washing my hand enough.

I just hope the worst is over.

Hello. Spencer I suggest You go to the Hospital, If you are experiencing light headednes and you heart is racing then its more than the flu,
If you dont want to go to the ER then at least call your doctor. Its a lot more than the flu if you are having these types of symptoms

The doctors believe its panic attacks, and to some extent i do to, because i am having panic attacks and its also a very horrible experience, it used to happen 10+ times a day, very severe panic attacks, but now its limited to around 5 a week, or once per day.

Ive had a ECG but havent been given the results yet, [it was a 24hr ECG]

Im going to a heart specialist during may and thats the really important test[s]

          Good luck me >.>

My boyfriend had this about two weeks ago and I thought I was in the clear since I had not come down with it. A week later I got the same thing. It started after a sushi dinner feeling bloated which quickly turned into a full day of violent vomiting and diarrhea. Day two consisted of couch time feeling extremely drained and weak with stomach cramps and dehydration. It took the next two days to recover from dehydration with lots of gatorade. My stomach is still not completely normal and I still have diarrhea but not nearly as bad. I thought it was bad sushi but everyone seems to have this virus now.

The inside of my nose hurts. It burns because when I was vomiting it came out my nose, too. My head hurts so much it hurts to move my eyes. And the really sick thing is I’m hoping it’s a virus and not a bad reaction or side effect to a promising, new medication I started yesterday. Because I can get over the virus. Is there anyway to find out what’s happening in Arkansas with the stomach flu? A map to show how widespread it is?

Pedialyte, Pedialyte, Pedialyte! I fell victim to this horrible virus 3 days ago. After about 8 hours of vomiting and other nasty things, my fiance made me drink a few sips of Pedialyte. I was extremely skeptical but let’s face it, after that many hours of purging, there’s not a whole lot of resistance to anything! Pedialyte does not taste good but it really, really helps. We had the individual powder packets on hand so my fiance mixed more water than instructed and put lots and lots of ice in it for me. I drank two servings of the Pedialyte over about 12 hours with some ice chips and small sips of water in between. After about 36 hours, I had a couple bites of Jello and a couple of saltines but wasn’t able to really stomach much else until 48 hours after. Started with toast and Jello and have moved on to chicken noodle soup. But just like for kids, the BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) is a good rule of thumb.

I found this website to be very helpful-

My husband was sick four days before me, we thought he had salmonella from raw pork, then when I got sick too we knew it was a virus. We also had just returned from Florida where there have been many cases of these crazy viruses all over the state. The first 4 hours were the absolute worst, I took some Pepto-Bismol after hour 5 that helped me sleep through the night unlike my husband who was up all night his first night.

So for the last 24 hrs I have been drinking mostly water, gateraide and chicken stock. Whenever I attemmpt to eat anything it goes straight through me. My husband continued eating normally and had a more difficult time- esp sleeping, so I’m basically on all liquids right now.

Hope this helps you all get through this nasty nasty bug! : )

I got sick in the middle of the night, a week ago. Diarrhea all night, and then I started vomiting at 5 am, but there was nothing in my stomach. One entire day in bed, really suffering. Four days worth of weakness and slight nausea, and my ribs felt like I’d been beaten with a 2 by 4. It’s been 7 days, and today I started to eat regular food. By 4pm I vomited it all up….everything I ingested since I awoke. I have no idea when I’m going to be okay. This is a very unusual GI virus.

Wow… 3 days now.. I’ve been vomiting, having explosive diarrhea, excruciating cramps, horribly dehydrated, extreme fatigue, dizziness, shakiness, fever, chills, aches, sleeplessness, the list goes on.. I do advise you whippersnappers to WASH YOUR HANDS. This flu is NO JOKE. I’m an 18-year-old female and this has knocked me flat on my behind. I have an amazing immune system, nonetheless, it has completely wiped me out. I want to wish all of you who will have this or have already.. Good luck. It’s no day at the beach. Now, on to the loo for the 19th time today. Toodles!

Am so glad I listened to my body. It was definitely telling me what I needed to do. Woke up this morning at 4 am feeling very queasy. Thought I had gotten too hot under the covers since I had on warm pajamas. Changed pajamas and almost immediately went the bathroom with diarrhea. Felt Ok after and went back to bed. About an hour later rushed to the bathroom throwing up. Was making my eyes water and could feel gunk stuck in my throat. Disgusting. Felt a little better and went bacj to bed. About an hour and a hald later woke up with diarrhea again. Kept alternating like this every hour. By the time I was getting back in bed my husband was waking up for work. I told him I was sick and probably wouldn’t make it to work.
By that point I felt very weak and achey like I had a fever and asked my husband uf my forehead felt hot. He said it was a little warm. He asked if I wanted some juice. That sounded really unappealing so I asked for water. Tasted excellent but still felt sick.
Continued throwing up and having diarrhea every hour until 9 or 10am. Called in sick at work. My boss said to get immodium. The only thing I had at home which I thought might help is IBU Profen, which I took three tablets for the achey muscles. Went back to sleep til after 11 am and the achiness was gone and no longer felt urge to vomit, but felt extremely weak and hot. Had made plans to get things accomplished since have day off now, but just getting a shower and getting myself dressed caused me to run out of breath. Laid back down about 12 45 PM and got up an hour later. Still feel very weak and now am freezing cold. Currently am sitting in front of apce heater with my dog and cat.
During the entire morning kept debating on what to eat. Don’t have anything appealing in the house and knew to stay away from dairy and heavy foods. Haven’t eaten yet, but feel like I need something to regain strength. Saltine crackers are good suggestion as well as the bouillon soup, someone mentioned banana popsicles which sounds appealing as well. Have none of these at home and hope to go to grocery store soon if can start walking around without losing my breath again.
Have many plans this weekend! Hope I do not have to cancel on all them! Sounds as though my case may not be too severe. My mom told me her friend’s daughters got this virus and were having projectile vomitting! I am certainly glad I haven’t!!!

I just got sick with this virus as well. I woke up around 12am and felt horrible and felt like I was going to get sick. I took a Tums thinking that this was just a simple stomach ache, but I soon found out I was wrong. About 30min later I moved to the bathroom where I spent the rest of the night throwing up… having diarrhea… just not a fun night at all. So all day the next day I sipped Ginger Ale, water, and had a few saltine crackers. Sadly though, I’m still not feeling good.

So I have had this virus for about a week. The first 2 days were the worst but I find I still have to be on the BRATT (Banana, rice, applesauce, tea and toast) pretty much. I did a little survey among my friends and co workers and all say this horrible thing lasts a week to 10 days. I, fortunately, did not have the headache and if I had a fever it was low grade. i just wish more people would stay home when they had symptoms and stop spreading this around!

Had it Wednesday night and stopped puking around 1230 p.m. Thursday afternoon. It’s now Saturday and I still don’t feel 100%. Anything I eat makes me feel nauseated. I think I need to stick to water and saltines. I have had this racing heart thing for a bit too. Is that a symptom or do I need to talk to my doctor? I wish I didn’t feel so crappy…UGH!!!

I was wandering if this could be a sign of the stumach flu going around. My stumach is rolling has been all day long. My head hurts and I feel sick to my stumach.

This is the same in the UK. Very contagious, more unusual than the regular stomach bug. It comes with heart palpatations, unusual tiredness, strange headaches, chills and my stomach hasn’t returned to normal yet after over a week. Stay well and stay in if you have it!
