Buying a Bicycle Safety Helmet

Buy a helmet that is approved by ANSI (American National Standards Institute), Snell or ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) because other helmets may not be safe. Buy a helmet that fits! Adjust the chin strap to fit snugly. The front and back straps should meet in a “v” shape below your ear. Adjust the straps so that the helmet sits flat on your head.

The helmet shouldn’t move around more than 1 inch on your head or slide down over your eyes when pushed or pulled. Use the padding strips that come with your helmet for a snug fit.

Buy a helmet that you like. That way you probably won’t have to be reminded to wear it. Be careful about decorating a helmet yourself. Some paints and stickers can damage the protective shell.
