Stomach Flu (gastroenteritis)

This information is about stomach flu for adults and some information does not apply to children. You’ll learn what stomach flu is, what its symptoms are, what to eat when you have stomach flu and how to treat stomach flu.

Stomach flu is often called “intestinal flu.” It’s an illness caused by a virus, and it produces different symptoms in different people. What people call stomach flu is usually marked by nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and a general sick feeling.

How to Treat Stomach Flu Symptoms

First, you need to know that antibiotics, such as penicillin, don’t work on flu because antibiotics only kill bacteria. The flu is caused by a virus. Your body’s defenses do the best job in fighting the illness.

You can help your body fight the flu by getting as much rest as possible. Do light activities if you must do something, but rest as soon as you get tired. Stay home from work, unless your symptoms are mild. You’ll recover faster that way, and you won’t risk infecting others at work.

You should also drink enough fluids to avoid dehydration ??? but that takes some care when your symptoms are nausea and diarrhea. So let’s cover what you can do to relieve these symptoms.

What to Eat When You Have Stomach Flu

When your stomach is upset, the last thing it needs is food. If you feel nauseated, give your stomach a rest from food. Don’t eat or drink anything for about two hours. If you are vomiting, don’t eat or drink anything for about four hours. Then begin taking small sips of water. If you can keep the water down, gradually work up to small amounts ??? half-a-cup or less ??? of Gatorade, flat ginger ale, or half-water half-grape juice (don’t drink juice if you are also having diarrhea). Do this for four to eight hours. You can flatten ginger ale by stirring it to let the bubbles escape. If you are keeping down liquids, and feel like it, try eating saltine crackers or dry toast. Avoid sugary drinks, orange juice and other acidic beverages, and foods that are high in sugar, greasy or spicy.

You can also try the anti-nausea drug Dramamine if you are sure that you are not pregnant or allergic to it. Dramamine is not safe to take during pregnancy. This non-prescription medication is available at drug stores, and should be used as directed. If these measures don’t control your nausea, you should contact your healthcare provider. You should also call your healthcare provider if you take daily medication for any chronic medical condition and the nausea prevents you from taking your medicine.

Another common symptom of stomach flu is diarrhea. If you develop diarrhea, don’t eat or drink anything for four hours. Then start with sips of water and work up gradually, over several hours, to small amounts of ginger ale, Jell-O, Gatorade, or bouillon (clear soup). Again, you can also try saltines or dry toast. But don’t eat fruit juices or other solid foods for 24 to 48 hours. These foods will just stimulate the diarrhea. Sometimes dairy products also stimulate diarrhea after the initial flu, and therefore, it may be wise to stay away from dairy products for a few weeks.

After the first 24 to 48 hours, gradually resume eating solid foods like bananas, applesauce, or dry toast. Meanwhile, you can try the non-prescription medication Donagel or Kaopectate, as directed on the label, to help control diarrhea.

With diarrhea, you should call your healthcare provider if you don’t improve after three days ??? or if the diarrhea gets worse. Also call if your diarrhea is bloody, if you have severe abdominal cramps associated with nausea, vomiting and fever, or if you are sick after having recently returned from a trip to another country.

The stomach flu virus is contagious and can spread to family and friends

Viral gastroenteritis is contagious. The viruses that cause stomach flu are spread through close contact with infected persons (for example, by sharing food, water, or eating utensils of someone who has the stomach flu). So don’t let anyone eat or drink after you. You can also spread the virus by not washing your hands after cleaning up vomit or diarrhea, or after using the bathroom. So the best way to prevent the spread of the virus is washing your hands often and not spreading the virus for others.

Key points about stomach flu:

  • Stomach flu can have different symptoms, but the common ones are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Only your body can cure this condition, but you can help it do the job by getting plenty of rest.
  • For nausea and vomiting, stop eating for two to four hours, then gradually introduce small amounts of water and other fluids. Avoid most solid foods for 24 hours.
  • For diarrhea, don’t eat or drink for four hours; then gradually increase your intake of fluids. Avoid most solid foods and fruit juices for 24 to 48 hours.
  • The stomach flu virus is contagious – don’t let anyone eat or drink after you.
  • If your stomach flu symptoms are severe, unusual, or persistent, call your healthcare provider for advice.

Call your doctor or go to the emergency room if you have bloody diarrhea, if you become dehydrated (feel weak, lightheaded or dizzy, or your heart is racing), if you’ve been vomiting for more than 2 days or if you’re vomiting blood.

I woke up this past Sunday morning feeling so incredibly nauseated, and I barely made it to the bathroom before throwing up. I vomited a few times Sunday morning, and I have had a low grade fever (around 100). Body aches were so bad, it felt like my bones were broken, and all I could do was lie on the couch and whine. I still cannot eat solid food (it is now Tuesday), because anytime I put anything even semi-solid in my stomach, such as crackers, I can just feel it sitting there for hours and hours, and it makes me nauseated again. Fever has finally broken, and not aching anymore, but the nausea persists. This is the sickest I have felt in 10 years.

04/14/2010–On Saturday, April 10th, my wife had a serious bout of vomiting and diarrhea. Of course I tried to assist in trying to help her out by going out getting medications and rubbing her forehead. Then on Monday, April 12th, I had a violent outburst of vomiting and diahrrhea. The diahrrhea is still going on, but not as intense as before. The mistake I made was by drinking two glasses of orange juice–made matters worse. I have lost over 8 lbs since Monday. I haven’t seen my health provider het, but if this continues, I will have to. Don’t know if I can take dramanine or kapectate, because I’m on Coumadin. I haven’t felt this bad in years and am deeply concerned about the weight loss.

my son is 5 and on tuesday afternoon he got off the bus with this look on his face and i asked him what he got in trouble for at school. he said i didn’t my tummy hurts so usually my first response is go poop and he said i tried and i can’t so i told him try again…still nothing so i called his soccer coach and told him he wouldn’t be there today and as soon as i hung up off my son went and started puking. we are now on day 3 and yesterday he had diarhea twice and has been puking everyday. i am worried about dehydration. i have tried to get him to take sips of water and pedialyte and he pukes everything up and then some…it is tiring i feel so bad for him and we already went to er just in case. they checked for appendicitis and came to the conclusion it is the stomach flu… i hope all of you get to feeling better cuz this is one nasty virus!!! good luck to everyone.

I got the stomach flu saturday night and It was the sickest I’ve ever felt in my life. I had constant vomiting and diarrhea at the same time. I’m on day three and the vomiting has stopped but I still can’t get myself to eat. Also whenever I walk I have pains in my lower stomach which caused me to miss class today. I really hope I’m better by tomorrow.

uGH my roommates got sick last week, I ended up taking one to the ER for complications. Then I started to get sick Saturday night, it was horrible. It was diarrhea followed by 24 steady hours of violent barfing. I got so ill and exhausted at one point I shit myself in my sleep while hurling at the same time. (I don’t have health care so I did not go to a doctor). It is now Tuesday (April 20th) and I still feel weak and unsettled, strong enough to eat some toast but not strong enough to be too far from a bathroom. I am starting to feel a little panicked and nervous for missing 2 days of work.

For everyone out there who’s had issues with not making it to the bathroom in time to puke…I’m one of a family of six, four kids in two sets of bunkbeds, and whenever someone gets the stomach flu, they have to bed down on towels in the bathroom, and everyone else uses a different bathroom. It sure saves a lot of cleaning. ;D

Oh my gosh, this is a big help reading the website comments. Mine started on Tuesday at noon, with nausea, dizziness. By 5 pm had to lie down, proceeded to have the most intense horrific vomiting for the next 8 hours, with periods of calm in between. I was relieved when it became “only” diarrhea. I understand now, why someone can die in their own vomit. Wed, exhausted, stayed in bed, Thurs, better, but very weak, keeping applesauce etc down. Made the mistake of eating a somewhat real meal in the evening, then had the gurgling, cramping and today now diarrhea, weak. This is the WORST episode of illness I have ever had and the longest. So back to square one and using gatorade, jello, applesauce.

I took my 2 year old son to the park a week ago, great weather, sunny out – no harm right? Wrong! He started playing in the sand, and I noticed him put his hand in his mouth. Uh-oh I thought, I’m gonna be paying for that later. Sure enough that night during his sleep, he started becoming restless. Day after, non-stop vomiting and diarrhea, fever, and no appatite. Its been a week for him and he’s better, but now I’m starting. I know children experience it a lot different than adults, but if my son ever felt the way that I did last night – sudden severe weakness, racing heart, dizziness, projectile vomiting and nausea, fainting and waking up hugging the toilet still with uncontrollable diarrhea out of nowhere all within 1 minute of me getting out of bed in the middle of the night – I think he handled it a lot better than I did! Gatorade has never looked so delicious! Get Better Everyone!

I organized my 1st BBQ this Saturday night. I Had a great time. I had some keg of Warsteiner beer 5L, mostly by myself, minus 3 pints for my fs. Woke up Sunday at 3:45, 5:45, 6:45, 7:45, after I lost track…, shaking my head next to the toilet bowl, cramps in both of my legs, and cold, hot, rushes. My first thought? I’ve must go s..t face last night…
After my nausea and appetite haven’t changed, its Wednesday 72 hours later, I realized that there is something in the air. My gf, has the same symptoms and had a glass of sangria! We both suffer from Gastro. So what is the best think to do? Here is my advice: I don???t take any meds! (the only exception is my hangover body Mr. Alka-Seltzer). Coca-Cola, Ginger Ale, Sleep, sleep, did I said sleep, do some yoga, bike ride, go for a short walk, Indian chai spice tea is not bad either, avoid heavy duty cheeseburgers with fries, and if you not limping towards your right leg, have a little puff on something if no one sees you.
    Good luck,

I have been feeling weak and nauseous for the past week. Yesterday I vomitted and in my prayers last night I asked that my nausea please go away. Prayers didn’t help and today I have been vomitting and extreme nausea but no diarrhea. I have had crazy sweats like I’m having hot flashes. Can’t even keep water down today. I tried to eat a hotdog bun just to try to eat something but it came right back up. I too have had weird dreams…not sure if related. This is the worst ever!!!

your fever (which probably accounts for the hot flashes and sweating) is giving you fever dreams. nasty hallucinations, disorienting dreams that sometimes feel excruciatingly real while remaining surreal, illogical, and miserable.

I woke up last wednesday night barfing and having diarrhea. I teach 2nd grade and I had a student go home on Monday with a fever – pretty sure that’s who I caught it from :( I have had diarrhea almost constantly with no sign of improvement. Now it’s Sat. afternoon and I thought I for sure be feeling better by now – but nope…I just tried brushing my teeth and then had to stop so I could puke. I feel so bad for everyone on his comment page because it does feel like your dying…but at least I know now that I’m not alone. If anyone has other food suggestions besides saltines or bread let me know. They both make me puke.

Oh my god… I feel as though the black death is upon me. I went to bed around 11:30pm feeling uncomfortably full for having eaten such a small meal. After about 20 mins the stomach pains started. They must’ve stopped at some point because next thing I know, it is 1:30am and I am running for the bathroom. Watery poop is seriously not as fun as it sounds… Jesus ! And the vomitting! I will retch until nothing comes up but stomach acid. I’ve done so about 7 times since 1:30am. It is about 3pm now, I am racked with aches and chills. Dear lord, make it stop?

I am 64 and live in Minneapolis. I started vomiting Sunday night after I had gone to bed. Then came the diarrhea. This cycled every hour through the night. My stool became so loose that it was just liquid. I called my pharmacy and they suggested Imodium. I called my doctor’s office and they agreed and told me only to eat and drink the four foods known as BRAT. (Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast.) This is day three and I am feeling much better. I’m going to ease back into regular food today. I lost five pounds.

I’ve been sick since 4/29/10 and still fighting it today 5/6/10. I feel like I got hit by a truck. I am feeling a bit better but it took me along time to get my stomach in control. I had diarrhea none stop. I ended up going to the ER because I got dehydrated. They gave me IV but there isn’t much they could do for me since the stomach flu is something that only your body can cure on it’s own. I’m still weak but I’m getting out of bed more then before. I drank sparkling water and switch to Gadorate with half glass of water. You have to make it half and half to not get too much sugar in your system. This helped me get hydrated again. Now for food I had crackers, toast, baked potatoes with salt, chicken noodle soup. It will come back out your system but I kept trying and trying and finally it’s starting to stay in my system. I hope this works for all you.

Good Luck and hope you get well soon.

I currently have a nasty case of the flu, and read through all these comments. For those of you with diarrhea, I strongly recommend drinking some Jell-O water. It has always helped me, and helps my son. I make it strong, so I don’t have to drink much. Some warm tap water, 1/2 to 1 cup, plus a 1/2 to 1 package of any flavored Jell-O. It will help “bind” for lack of a better word. It also helps with the flu most of the time. The warm water is good for the stomach and also hydrating…it usually stays down better than regular water for us. Hope that helps someone someday (: Good luck to all you sickly ducks like me!

I woke up friday morning fine, took at test at 8, was in the bathroom by 930 with diarrhea. I though it was just a fluke thing, so I continued my day, which just progressively got worse. I had chills (it was 70 degrees outside) and I started getting a fever by seven. Luckily my roommate was gone for the weekend so I didn’t get her sick as well, but friday night I thought I was going to die. I went to the bathroom every half hour to an hour with a half hour in between each trip. I didn’t vomit at all, thank God. I would sleep for about an hour or hour and a half, go to the bathroom, and sleep more. My fever broke saturday, and the diarrhea subsided a great deal on Sunday. It’s now Monday and I feel a thousand times better, except I’m still crampy from the diarrhea, but I’d take it over the last three days anytime.
    Worst sickness of my life!

Suggestions: SLEEP as much as humanly possible. Don’t eat anything, even if your starving, only liquids until the vomiting or diarrhea calms down, in which case water, no sports drink (the sugar might aggravate your stomach), no acidic fruits. DO eat saltines, toast, applesauce, yogurt, light colored bland foods.

Mine started a week after I believe I was exposed. Started with fever and chills on a thursday afternoon, nausea and (fortunately, I guess) just diarrhea. Painful, too. Now it is Sunday night and while I feel better, the diarrhea keeps coming :( At least it is not green anymore, that was a little concerning.

I’ve heard it takes a week to shake this — it’s horrible! I guess the only good thing to say about it is that it is good for weight loss ;)

Friday afternoon became nauseous… no vomiting. God knows I tried. Thought it was food poisoing. Friday evening severe stomach cramps. Curled up in a ball on my bed, moaning with every breath and every turn of my body. Diarrhea, chills, fever, leg cramps, and lack of body strength continued the entire weekend. Heating pad on stomach was soothing. Water and ice chips were all that I could consume. Tried applesauce and chicken broth on Sunday. Kept it down, but had more stomach cramps and it went right through. Drug myself out of bed to go to work. I’m here, still in pain and not pleasant to be around. Feels like I’ve been sucker punched in the ribs. On top of this, I now have an upper resp. infection setting in.

My daughter woke up this morning with her stomach upset and now I cant eat and my stools are loose. I hope and pray mine does not get as bad as many on here. We have had it like that before its like a nightmare. I’ve been spraying Lysol and air sanitizer like crazy, those Lysol disinfectant wipes are fantastic for wiping down the toilet and counters and faucets. Last time this happened I washed all the bedsheets daily as I was able to move, and tried my best to stay away from the kids (I have 3) who were well, I let my husband handle them. I rested a lot!

I drink the sugar free Poweraide and Crystal Light has these hydration packets you can add to bottled waters. My pediatrician told me to administer those gas drops to my daughter to help relax her tummy and ease the tightness. Plus another good idea is Chamomile or Peppermint tea that is lukewarm with a pinch of salt (helps you retain hydration) and Splenda or just a touch of honey to sweeten it.

I visited my father in assisted living last Wednesday. He said a lot of the residents had a stomach virus, which in elderly people can be very serious. He wasn’t sick and didn’t get sick. I cut my visit short, since I didn’t want to be exposed to the virus. I washed my hands as soon as I got home.

On Thursday morning at 4:30 a.m., I woke up with horrible stomach cramps, nausea, and diarrhea. I had chills, body aches, and a fever of 100. My feet were like blocks of ice. I didn’t throw up, but I would have felt better if I had. I always fight against throwing up. All day, I stayed huddled on my bed, near the bathroom. I couldn’t even make it outside to get my mail and newspaper. Whenever I felt the nausea coming on, I clenched my teeth and rode it out. By 6:00 that night, the worst was over. I was able to eat a little the next day, but I didn’t make it back to work until Monday. My appetite didn’t fully return until yesterday.

I have NEVER had anything like this & it came at me like a ton of bricks. 1st it started with what I thought was a cold on the Tuesday, then Wednesday morning 19th May I was on the Potty for an hour wretching & diarrhea. The wretching was the worst as there was no food to upchuck. This is day 3 & I have slept on & off for 24 hours. I still have the diarrhea,From all the wretching my lungs & Ribs are so sore that I can’t laugh or cough without pain. Some cramping & diarrhea are still with me but I feel like I’m on the mend now.I don’t have the nausea, thanks in part to taking Gravol & Extra strength Tylanol. I am 62 Have 10 Grandkids, so I know once in a while even though I am healthy, some thing will grab me like a cold. BUT THIS!! NO THANK YOU!!!. My Husband not used to having a sick wife just came in with a drink called COCONUT WATER. I had phoned some stores after researching on the internet. So hopefully I will be up & atem’ in a few more days. Yours in good health

Hey Guys I had the same thing to and i’m glad to know i was not the only to experience this awful sickness. Im 17 and I missed a week of school the first 8 hours of the sickness was the worst barfed about 3-5 times constant diarrhea. What helped me feel rejuvenated was “one” hot bath no more then 10 mins. Then i put on my long johns, sweat pants, tshirt, long sleeve shirt then sweater and wool hat and laid under 2 quilts. Tons of sweat and gatorade. Finally what really helped was while I felt weak and had minor diarrhea I went to the ER and got an I.V. Stood in the hospital for about 2-3 hours(as the IV hydrates you become restless and i felt like ripping it out of my arm) I felt decent went home and slept. Took one extra day to heal. Ate broiled thin slices of chicken (cutlet) and the Doctor gave me something called (metoclopramide hcl) its some kind of intestine stimulate so ur stomach can digest food.I wish to help everyone who has this sickness cause in my entire life I’ve never EVER felt so bad. And Repetitive baths are not the best. I wish anyone who has this the best of luck cause you will need it.

Our 2 year old son was vomitting on Saturday night, we thought it was from heat exhaustion from playing at an indoor inflatable moon jump for kids. He seemed still under the weather on Sunday. Come Monday he was good, however, my wife came home from work early (almost vomitting during the drive home). She was violently ill, diarreha and vomitting (she is 24 weeks pregnant), actually called in sick this morning to work. I took our son out of the house for most of the day yesterday to give her some peace and quiet. Then around 3am this morning the onset of the illness hit me like an Airbus 380A. I was vomitting violently and couldn’t keep anything down, just out. As the day progresses my stomach is still upset and I haven’t ate much. However, I purchased some gatorade and froze them. I think it is helping me keep the fluid down a bit better (it might just be psychological though). Yogurt seemed to help a bit too although the dairy triggered my stomach. I almost forgot NSAIDS help with the bone/joint aches and tums is ok for the upset stomach. Just some tips.

Felt a little odd on sat evening, I had a feeling of “water on the stomach” on mon I vomited numerous times tues evening. I stopped eating on wed, kept being sick vomiting food and mucus, going to toilet as usual although mucus that end too. then thurs ate just a little, made the mistake of eating a slice of pizza and then thought maybe should have eaten dry crackers instead. I vomited it all back up, drank boiled water and plain water, absolutely nothing has stayed down, strange though as I am of very slight build and I don’t feel weak or fatigued at all, just keep vomiting all the time, I must have vomited over 50 times today after drinking boiled water. I have just read that a slightly sugared drink such as the kind that put salts back into your body are easily absorbed whereas plain water is more difficult I’ve been sipping it but has only just stayed down in the last hour. This is day 6. All the best to everyone else out there, this isn’t the most pleasant feeling!! apologies for the poor grammar, it is late and I am still feeling ill.

Omg this is the second time of experiencing the stomach flu! I hate it. Hoping I’d be strong enough to stay at work I ended up coming home after only working for two hours. On that day before going to work I woke up so many times early in the morning trying to puke but it just didn’t come out but later I had to take a crap like so many times. Then later I finally threw up! Coming home from work I slept for a good 5 to 6 hours. After taking some meds im feeling a bit better now and craving so bad for spicy food but I keep on telling myself I shouldn’t take the risk of eating spicy food after feeling only a little bit better. Having the stomach flu the first time I got it from my husband but this time I dont know how I got it. I’m guessing I ate something wrong cause thats how it all started. I’m hoping everyone well feel better as so for myself!

I started feeling ill around 530 on monday evening. My dad had fallen ill with the stomach flu on Sat at my little brothers swim meet. At first, I felt nauseas and threw up a couple time but it wasn’t anything intense. Then I attempted to eat some pizza and immeadiately started throwing up violently. In the midst of throwing up I had an onset of diahhrea. It was like every time I drank something it would immeadiatly come up or out. I couldn’t even pee. I honestly thought I was go to go on myself at the same time as vomitting. This lasted 13 straight hours. I am still extremely naseaus and now I am running a fever. I am still not able to eat anything solid and fell horrible. I really hope this will pass soon.

nichole it sounds liek what happened to me last month it was a mild HEAT STROKE! vomiting when it is hot and you havn’t had enough to drink!!!
anyways ….Last week It started with a quick chill-like all of the sudden I was cold (in florida where the past week the weather has been humid and hot !)
THEN IT HIT! THE RUNS!!!!! THis is by far the worst I recall ever having the runs! Severe stomach aches! And major runs! Felt like I was having a baby-but the baby stunk!!! lol
I had to go to the LOCAL ER!!!!!!! to get an iv, and they took me off the ANTIBIOTICS that were making the diarrhea worse,,, my doc had given me antib’s thinking I had a cold- but it was really VIRAL whcih antib’s do not help!
anyways i did the bananna and applesauce shake thing and now it finally is calming down my stomach…one more thing I managed to get myself and kids to the beach (under a hat and sunglasses ) and would you believe that the OCEAN water actually made me feel better!

I have been sick since Sunday. I noticed my pulse was a little fast at my sons baseball game and I thought it was due to the heat – - wrong. On Monday I woke up to my stomache cramping up. It felt as if an alien was trying to rip out of my stomache lol. I called my husband at work crying from the pain. I had nausea and was lucky I never threw up but was unlucky at the other end – - Thanks Northern quilted tissues ^_^ I called my doctor who told me it sounds like either stomache or intestinal flu ( What the heck is the difference?) Anyways it’s Wed and I still feel like doody but my toilet is getting a nice break from my (Oh we won’t go there) lol
